The next in an ongoing stream of gruesome videos released to the public showing the exploits of ISIS has hit the internet. Released online on Sunday, this latest ISIS “promo” video claims to show militants executing 30 Ethiopian Christians in Libya.
The victims were confirmed Monday to be Ethopian citizens. A statement was issued by Ethiopia’s Office of Government Communications Affairs, saying: “The Ethiopian government is deeply saddened by the barbarous act committed against our innocent nationals.”
The half-hour video begins with speeches decrying Western culture and Christians. At the end of the 30 minute long video, the Ethiopian prisoners are shot in the back of the head or beheaded by their masked captors. The victims’ severed heads are then shown lying in the sand.
“You will not have safety even in your dreams, until you accept Islam,” announces a masked man, in English. “To the nation of the cross: We are now back again,” he adds.
Previous ISIS videos have depicted the execution of a Jordanian fighter pilot, foreign journalists, and Egyptian Christians in Libya, where a branch of ISIS (based in Syria and Iraq) operates.
Many experts believe that the Islamic militants operating in Libya are independent locals, only claiming allegiance with ISIS. Libya has been a disaster of militant activity since the overthrow of dictator Muammar al-Qaddafi in 2011. These murderers took advantage of the country’s unique predicament of being a thoroughfare for many migrants from Africa trying to reach Europe, in search of a better life.
